The COVID-19 World Economy | STL.News

(STL.News) This article is the latest of a series of articles that will examine the impact of the Covid-19 Economy in Australia.  Over the past few years, Australia has been experiencing an unprecedented growth in the number of young adult migrants, and this has been especially true in the construction industry, where over the last two years the number of workers on the road-building sites has been on a growth of over a third.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DAC) has recently undertaken the development of a report into the future workforce needs of Australia, and the result is a report entitled “Australia’s Future Workforce: A Sectoral Outlook”.  The report is based on interviews with business leaders, representatives of different types of industries, as well as government agencies. While the results of these interviews suggest that there is considerable opportunity to grow jobs in the construction sector in Australia, the report also indicates that the need to attract and retain skilled workers is perhaps greater.

The recent period has seen an increase in unemployment, which may have had a negative effect on recruitment and retention.  In addition, the introduction of the Australian Job Security Scheme (AWSS) in 2020 has seen more companies adopting the same practices as those employed by the Australian Government.  While it was the implementation of the AWSS that created the need to build a stronger and more resilient construction industry, it is estimated that the scheme has only contributed to an increase in demand.  Furthermore, whilst the Government has invested considerable resources in this process, it is clear that it is not enough to address the need for qualified workers in this sector.

The current employment situation in Australia, particularly in the construction industry, is a reflection of the increased reliance on jobs in the construction industry to keep a balance in the country’s economy.  As well as being an important part of our economy, the construction industry provides a vital source of highly skilled labor and is therefore one of the key drivers of our economy.

Many companies have realized that if they want to remain in the construction industry, they have to provide a suitable level of security and employment for their staff, as well as providing a good level of wages and conditions.  While some workers have responded by taking on more part time or short-term work, others have found it difficult to adjust their schedules to work in this environment.  As the economic outlook in Australia has continued to change, many companies have had to make the difficult decision of whether or not they should continue to provide workers on the road-building sites with reasonable and stable employment.  While there are certainly some companies that have taken this route, others have decided to continue to rely on low skilled workers.

However, the economic environment in the construction industry in Australia is also changing and, due to the introduction of a new immigration policy in Australia, more companies are making the decision to invest in a recruitment strategy that takes into consideration the needs of the young Australian skilled workers who are attracted to the country’s overseas construction sector.  It is estimated that the recent changes to the Migration Program has led to a significant increase in the number of skilled foreign workers in Australia’s construction industry, with many companies opting to focus their recruiting efforts on these individuals.
